Each security is given a number so that it is easily identifiable. This process was initiated in 1962 by the New York Clearing House Association. Today cusip numbers are accepted as unique and identifiable through the financial world. South African companies that are listed overseas such as Telkom (879603108) and MTN (62474M108) all have cusip numbers for their securities.
